1. What did you do in 2018 that you’d never done before?
That’s easy. I started wearing highlighter. I’m basically Reese Witherspoon now.
2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
This year my planner had a section where you could input your goals for 2018. I am a rule follower and a great lover of completing only the most trivial tasks- so I filled it in. I was too aspiration. Among the goals I listed were to lose 5 pounds and create annual photo albums for the past 10 years. Also, blog weekly…
I did not lose 5 Lbs. I gained 10 then lost it again, so I’m pushing lose 5 lbs to next year. I think I will set more achievable goals this year like “write in my planner with felt tip pens.”
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Oh yes. A great many pals made good on the “be fruitful and multiply” command. But I didn’t. #PTL
4. Did anyone close to you die?
NO. And again #PTL
5. What places did you visit?
6. What would you like to have in 2019 that you lacked in 2018?
The sort of presence that others felt comforted by. Is this something one can get?
7. What dates from 2018 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Again I would love to stress that I barely remember any dates. In fact it’s just this year that I have been able to answer with confidence- the birthdates of my children. But here I go!
September 1st. Nick got promoted!
December 15. Nick graduated with a Masters degree in Meteorology and Oceanography. Now I can ask him things like “Why is it so cold out right now Nick?! And he can answer “Because it is winter”.
Nick is now the most learned one in our family. He did the maths and learned the things and I heard the word bathymetry thrown around but I never learned what it meant.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
By far it was Henry pooping on a toilet and not anywhere but a toilet. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. I stepped on poop unexpectedly more than once. 💩👹
The achievement that makes me seem holy:
Due to Operation Take Every Thought Captive, an operation started with the advice of a dear friend, I have begun, with the enormous help of my Risen Savior, to stop crazy thought spirals from ruining my day/life and redeeming the day sooner.
The achievement that will make me seem shallow:
Mastering “the floss”
9. What was your biggest failure?
Tim Keller says:
Many times people think if God has called you to something, he’s promising you success. He might be calling you to fail to prepare you for something else through the failure.
This year I was called to fail. Failing never feels easy or makes you look great, but I pray these words from How Firm a Foundation were true and that I was sanctified a great deal.
“When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be with thee thy trouble to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.”
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Eemegersh my Psoriasis is mad inflamed. I don’t know why. Don’t say it’s gluten. I know there is someone out there dying to tell me it’s gluten.
If it’s anything it’s all the aspartame from the soft drinks I get at McDonalds. 💃🏻
Dooodooodo doo dooo. I’m lovin’ it!
Oh. And I’m pretty sure my pelvic floor is weaker than a dilapidated trampoline- but who needs bladder security anyway?!
11. What was the best thing you bought this year?
This. Beautiful. Trashcan!!!
I love this dual sided beauty. Easily wipes down. No nooks and crannies for gross crumbs inside. Trash bag compartment in the back. Children lean on it like it’s a water cooler, sometimes used as a tier to climb onto the counter. It’s already been dented and scratched, but every time I walk by I think “dang this trashcan is sleek and what’s up”
12. Where did most of your money go?
look. there are so many. each eats every day. everyday! they consume cheese. cheese is pricey. they eat nigh on 50 cheese sticks weekly.
So that’s where.
13. What did you get really excited about?
The Lord Jesus, in His infinite kindness to me which I deserve not, and the self sacrificing love of my husband laying down orders that he truly wanted, got our orders changed from San Diego to Norfolk.
Jesus loves me this I know, for to Norfolk here I go!
Tears of joy. That song “There will be miracles” from Prince of Egypt. No one got swallowed up by the Red Sea though.
14. What song will always remind you of 2018?
Look what you made me do by Taylor Swift.
I asked the Lord by Indelible Grace
15. Compared to this time last year, are you:
– happier or sadder?
Happier. Jesus loves me.
– thinner or fatter?
– richer or poorer?
Richer in a way because #promotion but kind of samesies because #sunshinestatetax
16. What do you wish you had done more of?
Maybe keegles? I’m not even sure how to spell it.
17. What do you wish you’d done less of? Getting mad about crumbs. Now in my defense, there were a shit ton. And I mean that.
But still. Getting mad?
18. How did you spend Christmas?
Nicks mom visited from Wales. We watched Owen sing a stirring and jazzy rendition of “Hot Chocolate” at the Christmas program. And also- eating our weight in Christmas candy. It’s no calories if it’s in the shape of a Christmas tree. And that’s science.
19. What were your favorite television shows?
The Great British Bake Off.
Noell is Old Greg. IM OLD GREG!!!!!!!
Any documentary about social media stars.
20. What were your favorite books of the year?
Bonhoeffer by Eric Metaxas
precious remedies against satan’s devices by Thomas Brooks-a Puritan no less.
The path between us by Suzanne stabile ( cuz I’m like too obsessed with the enneagram y’all!!)
21. What was your favorite music from this year?
Google play music plays whatever I want on my little google Butler and it’s the best.
Psycho by Post Malone
Come Lord Jesus by Sovereign Grace
Is He Worthy by Andrew Peterson
22. What were your favorite movies of the year?
The LEGO Movie. It was funny. And it’s been out for many years.
23. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
33!! I didn’t love 33. It’s too far away from 29.
I went to breakfast with my fam jam and then we picked out a Christmas tree. Had some friends over and ate fried chicken. 🐔🐔
24. What one thing would have made your year immeasurabley more satisfying?
If I could eat candy. Everyday. And it had the same antioxidant levels as chia seeds. If I said “Gals I just ate a bag of m&m’s!” And people genuinely responded “You are such a glowing example of the fit life mentality Kaley, Good for you”
25. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2018?
Because I live in NorCal I have slowly assimilated into the color palette of moss, fog, and snow capped mountains.
I cannot forsake color completely so I still wear clownish fitness pants. Because I’m a 4. On the Enneagram. And I’m an individual dammit!
27. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2018?
Your body can live off of coffee alone as the only liquid it consumes. Sure, you’re going to be dehydrated but if I’m going to open my gaping maw, the only thing I’m putting in there is coffee.
If something causes you to sin, cut it off. Bye Instagram. No more FOMO for KP.
28. Your guilty pleasure?
Sleeping. And Crunchwrap supremes. And clearly some recreation swearing. 😬
29. Song lyric that sums up the year:
I am my beloved’s
My beloved is mine
And the banner that hovers over us is older than time
So I run away home
Yes I run away home
I believe in the love of the Father
I believe in the power of grace
I believe that He brought us together
You are my one safe place
My one safe place
Also- here are all of my children on their birthdays this year:
